12 hours in Kunming

17 juin 2009

Since we caught an overnight train to Guilin the same day we arrived in Kunming, and we didn’t have any specific plan for this city anyway, we only spent the day there.

Our stay started quite badly, since all the so-called “24-hour self-service banking” ATMs were actually closed! Grrrrrr It took us about an hour walking around town (with our full bags on our backs) to find one, and get back to the train station to buy our soft-sleepers, bottom berth tickets. We then happily stored our bags at the “left luggage” office of the station and set out to check the town out.

First stop: breakfast! Dumplings (of course) and a local specialty served in some kind of terracotta pot

Although it looks very good, it was actually quite tasteless (stay away from the pink ham-like slice of… thing? it’s not good at all!)

Next stop: Carrefour! (a famous French chain of supermarket, actually #2 in the world after Wal-Mart). There, you can fish your own fresh fish from the buckets:

Roland actually “saved” one from certain death, as it sprang out onto the floor…

If you prefer frogs, they have them too!

Dry fish…

colourful fruits and veggies…

and industrial dumpling making for the masses!

As previously mentioned, you usually don’t find these items in the original stores in France ;-)

Step 3: walk around the city…

Fresh ducks hanging on the wall…

In case you have a problem, you can use robo-cop to call the real ones!

Step 4: settle down in a park
…and that actually was the truly good surprise of the day!
Activity #1: walk around the pools of lotus flowers…

With the occasionnal turtle (at least this one won’t be eaten! Although…)

and frog! (ditto…)

Activity #2: feed the fish…

They are probably among the best fed fish in the world!

Activity #3: listen to the nice music all around… Check the videos here and there

We actually spent quite a few hours in this very relaxing place, and liked it a lot! Kunming exceeded our (low) expectations :-)
